How To Handle Your English Homework: 7 Common Mistakes

English can be quite a daunting language whether you are a native speaker or you speak it as a second language. There are rules that most people are usually unaware of and perhaps do not even follow – until they have to take an English course. What you study in class is easy but when you have to apply it in your homework, it can become difficult. To make your task easy, here are some mistakes you might want to avoid when doing your homework.

7 Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • What students normally do is try to get their homework over with in a jiffy. They fail to understand that a lot of concentration is required to complete a task if they want to score well.
  • Students generally do not take their English courses very seriously since most of them think it has little professional value as it is not teaching anything related to their field. You need to understand that without clarity of thought, you will be able to achieve nothing. Thus, consider English an important subject.
  • One of the most common mistakes that most students make is NOT proofreading their work. Usually when you are working on an assignment, you start writing in a flow and sometimes, you might make mistakes even if you are really good at the language. So, always read it once or twice before submitting your work.
  • Instruction manuals for home assignments can be lengthy, but they are provided for your perusal so you can produce high-quality work. What most students do, however, is ignore it because they think they’ve read it so many times before. Remember that there can be changes in the instructions. Moreover, reading again will reinforce the instructions.
  • Usage of heavy vocabulary does not make an impressive essay. Usage of correct vocabulary, on the other hand, does. Do not keep on replacing the words with their synonyms because synonyms are not necessarily substitutes for that word. They can have a different connotation.
  • Know your audience. This is perhaps one of the most important things that students ignore. Know who you are writing for and devise an essay that appeals to the audience. Otherwise, it will bring you no good.
  • The wrong use of superlatives is also fairly common. Remember that you never use “more” and the suffix “-er” or “most” and “-est” together. For instance, “he is my most biggest fan” is incorrect. The correct form would be “He is my biggest fan.”

Avoid these common mistakes and ace your homework paper.
